Religious Girls // I Want to Believe
Is it totally lame if I blog about an album that technically came out last year? Well, whatever. I cannot sit idly by and say nothing about this mind-blowing masterwork by California band Religious Girls. I may be getting a little hyperbolic in this post (okay, a lot hyperbolic), but just read my exaggeration as an ill attempt to bottle my enthusiasm for these guys. There is no putting a cap on this. It’s going to spill out everywhere. You see their music is a genius concoction of cheeseless math rock (their drummer has to be on PCP or something), spastic synth smashing, and passioned screaming/gang vocals. The relatively long songs twist and morph from section to section all while maintaining this impossibly high energy. This stuff is a defib unit for the brain.
Ever since I saw these guys play this past spring I’ve been borderline obsessed with them. It was one of the most electric shows in recent memory and I gushed about it to anyone who would listen. From there I eagerly downloaded everything that the guys had on their Bandcamp page, and while the music was good, it wasn’t the incendiary display of power that was evidenced by their live show. Well, now here we are with I Want to Believe, the missing piece in this puzzle. According to the band they were “tired of waiting 4 labelz 2 press” and “now u can listen 2 our masterpiece whenever u want and we can move on 2 the nex 1.” Listen, it sucks when albums get shelved and I’m not sure exactly what the deal here is, but there is a twofold blessing at work here. 1) We finally get our hands on I Want to Believe and 2) The band is working on new material. Now put this on your iPod and never take it off.
